Carmarthen Mayor opens our new offices

Chris Jones, the Mayor of Carmarthen, George and Alfie at the new offices

Carmarthen Mayor Cllr Jeff Thomas visited on 24th July to open the charity’s new offices and draw the winning tickets in the Summer Raffle Draw.

Founded in 2001 and covering the whole of the UK, Cerebra has maintained its headquarters in Carmarthen. Cerebra moved to its new premises at the MacGregor Office Suite last month.

The event was a chance to celebrate the charity’s new headquarters as well as to hold their annual Summer Raffle Draw. The lucky prize winning tickets were drawn by Councillor Thomas.

Guests included local businesses, supporters of the charity and colleagues as well as some of the families that the charity support.

Chris Jones, CEO of Cerebra said: “We are excited to announce the opening of our new offices which marks an exciting new time for Cerebra. The new offices are also significantly cheaper to lease, saving the charity a substantial amount of money in rent and running costs”.

Cerebra is a charity that supports children with brain conditions and their families. Families where a child has a brain condition face challenges every day. Just to learn, play, make friends, enjoy and experience the world can feel difficult, even impossible. But Cerebra believes there is no challenge that can’t be overcome.

We held our Christmas raffle draw on Wednesday 19th December and had a very special guest do the honours.

Seven year-old Imogen has had an impressive year having climbed Pen y Fan with a little help from our Innovation Centre and it only seemed right that she should help us with this very important job!

We were also joined by Neil Robinson from Specsavers, who named us as their charity of the year in south and mid Wales and have done amazing for us over the course of the year.

We had our giant tombola filled with over 100,000 Christmas raffle tickets that our generous supporters had purchased and Imogen dived right in, choosing the three top prize winners and ten runners up.

The top three winning tickets are below and the rest will be available here soon. Check your tickets!

Josh Nurse Becomes an Ambassador

Joshua Nurse from Pontiets, Carmarthenshire is celebrating his 16th birthday by becoming an Ambassador for us and drawing the winning tickets in our Summer raffle draw.

15 year old Joshua Nurse from Pontiets is the same age as Cerebra – and we have known and worked with him and his family since he was a baby.  Josh was born with a rare condition called Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum. It means that Josh is missing all the connective tissue that links the right and left hemispheres of his brain, which has resulted in Josh having learning disabilities and autistic tendencies.

It took a long time before it was recognised that Josh had a problem, but when Josh was finally diagnosed his parents didn’t know where to turn – until they found Cerebra.

Josh has also been a great help to the charity when we’ve needed him – he has drawn winning raffle tickets presented cheques to lottery winners and posed for photos for charity publicity. He’s attended prestigious events at 10 Downing Street and the House of Lords and was delighted when we nominated him for a Child of Courage Award at the Journal Awards ceremony a couple of years ago – and he won! Josh is such a pleasure to be with and he has touched the hearts of everyone who has met him.

Josh celebrates his sixteenth birthday in August and to mark the occasion we have asked him to become an Ambassador for Cerebra, On 31st July Josh drew the Summer Raffle and was officially welcomed as an Ambassador – as well as enjoying an early birthday celebration with charity staff!

Elaine Collins, PR & Marketing Manager for Cerebra said: “It’s been such a pleasure to have known Josh and his family all of these years and to have watched him grow up – he’s touched the hearts of everyone who has met him. He’s done so much to help raise awareness of our work and we’re delighted to make him an official Ambassador for us”.

Summer Raffle 2016

Poppy and Rob

On 29th July 2016 eleven year old Poppy Jones drew the winning tickets in our Summer Raffle.

Poppy, who has cerebral palsy and chronic lung disease, made the news last month for completing the Cardiff Triathlon with her dad, Rob. The pair completed the challenging course using equipment designed and made by the charity’s Innovation Centre.

The pair have since become Ambassadors for Cerebra and are delighted to be able to help raise awareness of the work the charity does.

Poppy said: “Cerebra is special to me because they help support children like me with brain related conditions. When I was younger I spent a lot of time in hospital. In the past 3 years I have been better and helped fundraise for charity. This year, I did my first triathlon for Cerebra – it was amazing! My type of cerebral palsy is rare so I like to tell people more about disabilities and me. Next I would like to do the London marathon so more people can hear about Cerebra”.

The event was also chance to celebrate Poppy’s incredible achievement at the triathlon where she really did achieve her dream of overcoming all the odds and proving that she can do anything, with a little help. The duo helped to raise an amazing £10,000 for the charity which will be used to support more children like Poppy.

We hold two raffle draws each year with the top prize winner receiving £5000, a second prize of £1500 and a third prize of £500. There are also ten £100 Love to Shop vouchers for the runners-up. The lucky winners from the summer draw have been notified.

Summer Raffle 2015 – winning tickets drawn

Ryan draws the winning tickets

Ryan draws the winning tickets

On 31st July we drew the lucky winning tickets in our 2015 Summer Raffle draw.

The draw was made by a very special guest – four year old Ryan Hooper, who has Down’s Syndrome. Ryan and his family (mum and dad Vanessa and Simon Hooper and brothers Aiden, Dylan and Taran) recently enjoyed a well earned break at the charity’s holiday home in Pembrokeshire.

Many families with children who have special needs find it incredibly difficult to find a place to go on holiday that caters for their needs. Cerebra’s holiday home, Vallecchia, gives families an opportunity to enjoy a break without some of the difficulties they might experience on a standard holiday. There is a ramped entrance to allow wheelchair access and a large bedroom with en-suite facilities on the ground floor. It also has a multi-sensory room and a soft play area with tactile sensory toys. There is a large garden and a games room in the detached double garage, with table tennis, table football and a pool table.

Ryan’s mum Vanessa said “The holiday was amazing. It was a chance for all of us to spend time together as a family and to get away from the hassle of everyday life. There was plenty of space for all of us and it provided everything we needed. That time together was priceless”.

Pupils Rally Together to Fundraise

Staff and pupils at Redland High School for Girls in Bristol have raised money for Cerebra with a week of fundraising activities.

Cerebra was nominated by one of the pupils at the school after a relative of theirs received a specially adapted trike which was funded by us. This personal experience helped to spur on fundraising efforts which were organised by the school’s Chestnut House.

Pupils held cake and jumble sales, raffles, guess the teddy competitions and the pupils’ favourite – non-uniform day.

In addition to these activities, one pupil, Danielle Beach, also decided that she would go the extra mile and do a 54 mile cycle ride! In doing so, she contributed £155 to the final fundraising total which was an impressive £989.18.

Cerebra would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who was involved with fundraising for us.
