Toddle, Waddle, Run half marathon success

Sarah and Annaleigh at the Cardiff half marathon helping support Lucy to toddling victory!

Sarah and Annaleigh help support Lucy to the finish line!

We recently launched our Toddle, Waddle, Run campaign as part of the Cardiff Half Marathon, which this year included a toddler dash and mascot race as well as the main event.

On the 3rd October our youngest ever fundraiser, 21 month old Lucy toddled with the best of them and ended up in a very respectable third place. She was helped along by Annaleigh and Sarah – who was herself preparing to take part in the half marathon the following day.

Saturday was also the day of the mascot race where Cerebra’s infamous mascot Sir E. Bear was hoping to waddle to victory. He had been training hard and had his sights set on the win but sadly it was not meant to be and once again, he came last.

Sunday the 4th October was the day of the half marathon itself and Sarah, who is Cerebra’s Trust Fundraiser, did us proud – completing the race in an impressive 02:15:05.

Everyone at Cerebra would like to say a huge thank you to the team for all of their efforts – even Sir E. Bear!

Don’t forget, you can still show your support by sponsoring the team. Just text CERE12 and the amount you would like to donate to 70070. Thank you!

Follow Sir E. Bear’s training progress

Cerebra’s mascot Sir E. Bear is always ready to fly the flag for us.

In the last few years this brave bear has risen to the challenge and taken part in the Swansea and Cardiff mascot races. He’s done his very best but bears are not built for running and he came last.

This year he has started his training early and we’re going to be following his progress in a series of videos.

We hope you enjoy!

The Swansea mascot race is Sir E. Bear’s first challenge and takes place on 20th September. The Cardiff mascot race a couple of weeks later on 3rd October.

Sir E. Bear needs your help! He’s trying to raise money for Cerebra through his challenges and needs you to sponsor him! Sponsoring is quick and easy, just:

Thank you!

Summer Raffle 2015 – winning tickets drawn

Ryan draws the winning tickets

Ryan draws the winning tickets

On 31st July we drew the lucky winning tickets in our 2015 Summer Raffle draw.

The draw was made by a very special guest – four year old Ryan Hooper, who has Down’s Syndrome. Ryan and his family (mum and dad Vanessa and Simon Hooper and brothers Aiden, Dylan and Taran) recently enjoyed a well earned break at the charity’s holiday home in Pembrokeshire.

Many families with children who have special needs find it incredibly difficult to find a place to go on holiday that caters for their needs. Cerebra’s holiday home, Vallecchia, gives families an opportunity to enjoy a break without some of the difficulties they might experience on a standard holiday. There is a ramped entrance to allow wheelchair access and a large bedroom with en-suite facilities on the ground floor. It also has a multi-sensory room and a soft play area with tactile sensory toys. There is a large garden and a games room in the detached double garage, with table tennis, table football and a pool table.

Ryan’s mum Vanessa said “The holiday was amazing. It was a chance for all of us to spend time together as a family and to get away from the hassle of everyday life. There was plenty of space for all of us and it provided everything we needed. That time together was priceless”.

Cerebra recently held a Christmas Disco at the Broadmayne Village Hall in Dorchester.

Children who attended the event were treated to special appearances from Cerebra’s mascot Sir E. Bear and a very special guest: Santa Claus himself!

Santa made himself busy greeting all the guests to the party and even made sure that every child had their very own present.

As well as being able to show off their best dance moves, there was also a festive raffle and other games.

Cerebra Regional Officer Lilly Fahey who organised the event said: “I’m glad that everyone enjoyed the party and would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who attended.”

We get into the Christmas spirit with a Christmas party for special schools in Swansea.

Cerebra recently held a very special Christmas party for children in the Swansea area. Eighty seven children from, Parkland, Gwyresydd and Cwmglas Primary Schools and Bishop Gore joined us for an afternoon of fun and games.

Charity mascot Sir E. Bear dusted off his dancing shoes and showed off his very best moves, much to the delight of everyone who attended.

Santa made time out of his busy schedule to make an appearance and had help from some of his elves to give out presents to all of his guests.

Families Enjoy Bristol Ice Skating Session

KaiWe invited families to take part in an inclusive ice skating session in Bristol.

Families in Bristol recently enjoyed a day on the temporary ice at the At-Bristol Science Centre.

The special session allowed families who are members of the charity to have a free afternoon on the ice in a safe environment with some great equipment including “penguins” and “bananas” that were on hand to make sure there was no slipping, just plenty of sliding!

There was a special appearance of charity mascot Sir E. Bear who braved the ice himself to show everyone how it’s done!

Cerebra Regional Officer Kate Hedger who organised the event was very pleased with how much of a success the day was: “There were lots of smiling faces all around. I’m glad everyone enjoyed!” she said.

Cerebra hold many events throughout the year around the country. You can find out about upcoming events here.

Here are some of the pictures from the day:
