Magical Christmas at Covent Garden

On 22nd December, we held our ‘Christmas at Covent Garden’ concert at St Paul’s Church in London. Guests were treated to stunning performances from Hywel Girls’ Choir and Hywel Boy Singers and the Angelicus Chorale who comprised of Hannah Seward (soprano), Lauren Williams (soprano), John Hywel Williams (conductor), Huw Tregelles Williams (organ), Jane Jewell (piano), Gareth Hamlin (percussion), Jeremy Hywel (voice of Christmas).

We raised over £800 in donations on the night, with members of the iconic Chelsea Pensioners leading the way with their collection buckets!

It was a genuine delight to see how much everyone enjoyed the festive atmosphere, (as well as the mince pies and mulled wine) but the standing ovation that the choir received at the end of concert was the icing on the cake.

A massive Cerebra thank you to everyone who played a part in making the evening such a special event! We’ll be hoping to hold another event like this in 2017 so keep you posted! Here’s just a few of the photos:

We would like to say an extra special thank you to our sponsors, without who this event wouldn’t have been possible:

Cerebra’s Christmas Dash!

We recently celebrated our 15th birthday with a festive fancy dress dash in Carmarthen! We had lots of fun meeting local families and supporters who loved joining in with the Christmas fun.

There were three fancy dress races on the day starting with a Toddler Run for the little ones, a 100m Sprint for the more athletic and a Family Fun Run for everyone to get involved in. The costumes were great with some runners bedecked in tinsel, some festive superheroes and even a family of reindeer! The cast from the local panto also joined in the fun – with great rivalry between the Dame and King Rat!

The town’s Mayor, Cllr Wyn Thomas, presented prize hampers for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each race along with one for the best fancy dress.  The hampers were made up of goodies donated by local shops and businesses.

Families could also visit Father Christmas and his elf in his grotto and enjoy mulled wine, hot chocolate and mince pies, kindly donated by the local Co-Op store.

Our Event’s Co-ordinator, Cecilia Bufton, said: “we wanted to make this a lovely festive fun event that the whole community could get involved in, while raising awareness and funds for the great work that we do and celebrating our 15th birthday”.

We’d like to thank all the local businesses for their sponsorship and support, the Town and County Councils for their assistance, the Town Mayor for giving his time and students from the University of Wales Trinity St David for their photography skills.

Thanks to everyone who joined in the fun and made this event such a great success – we’ll see you all again next year!

A young girl’s Ice Skating wish is granted

The CIC Sleigh will allow Enna Thea to go skating with her friends

The CIC Sleigh will allow Enna Thea to go skating with her friends

The team at the Cerebra Innovation Centre (CIC) are about to grant a young girl who has Cerebral Palsy her very own Christmas ice skating wish.

Eight year-old Enna Thea Kul-Want from London has Athetoid Cerebral Palsy so has not been able to skate because she can’t wear conventional skates.

But this Christmas, thanks to the team at the Swansea-based Cerebra Innovation Centre, Enna Thea will be able to ice skate with her family and friends for the very first time.

The product was designed after Enna Thea’s mum, Catherine, contacted the CIC team after her daughter had been invited to an ice skating party at the Broadgate Ice Rink in London’s Exchange Square.

Catherine didn’t want her daughter to miss out on the celebration so after discussing ideas with Dr Ross Head from the University’s Cerebra Innovation Centre, the team set about designing and creating an original product styled on Santa’s sleigh that would allow Catherine to skate behind and push Enna Thea along on the inside.

The sturdy stylish design has been manufactured from birch ply with a metallic red weather proof lacquer coating. It is fitted with polypropylene skating blades which have been machined with the same radius on the blade as regular skates allowing the sleigh to skate in a straight line, but also making it steerable. The product is finished with a beautiful jewel encrusted, royal blue velvet, fit for a young princess that will allow Enna Thea to direct her mum and “skate” wherever she wants.

Dr Ross Head of the Cerebra Innovation Centre, based at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David said:  “We are so lucky to be able to do this as a job. I hope that Enna Thea really enjoys her skating party and many more hours of skating afterwards. Our job is to design and make beautiful products to help kids with neurological conditions, which brings an amazing sense of satisfaction for us. Our design skills are challenged but put to good use in making products that make children’s and family’s lives easier, and give them the same opportunities as other kids.”

Catherine Yass had already been in contact with Dr Ross Head regarding a different product and knew that the team’s designs are always beautifully designed as well as being extremely functional.

“I had written to Ross to thank him for his work on a different product and as a ‘by the way’ comment, asked him whether he had any solutions to ice skating.  He came straight back saying that he’d love to help us and has designed us the most amazing present.  We are over the moon – the sled is absolutely beautiful.  Enna Thea finds it all incredibly exciting,” says Catherine.

Catherine and Enna Thea tested out the sleigh on Sunday December 13th at Broadgate Ice Rink, Exchange Square, London. EC2A 2BQ.

To find out more information about the Cerebra Innovation Centre, or to approach the team with an idea for new equipment, please contact cic@cerebra.org.uk or 01792 483688.

As you can see from the smile on her face, Enna Thea loved the sleigh!

Christmas is a special time for families. Please give a special gift this Christmas to so that we can continue to help children like Seren.

Christmas is a special time for families and this year we’d like to ask you to give a gift of just £5 so that we can continue to support children like Seren.

Seren is a typical girly girl and likes pink things, singing, school and bossing her older brother about! Seren also suffers from uncontrolled epilepsy. At its worst, she was suffering between three and eight large seizures and up to a hundred small seizures every day.

Earlier this year, Seren endured two major brain surgeries at Great Ormond Street Hospital to remove part of her brain.

Despite the hardship she faced, she continued to smile and joke through months of intensive physio and occupational therapy and just five days after returning home she was out on the family farm helping to feed the lambs.

Cerebra has been there for Seren and her family giving practical and emotional help every step of the way. Our strength is our ability to give wide ranging support to meet each family’s individual needs making a positive difference to children’s lives.

You can meet Seren and her family in this video

There are around 500,000 children like Seren living with a neurological condition in the UK. This year we have helped 27,000 families. Please help us to be there for every child who needs our support.

Please give a special gift this Christmas and donate just £5 today. Every donation will help us to make a difference to the lives of so many brave children just like Seren.
