A personal portfolio, also sometimes called a passport or personal profile, is a colourful reader-friendly book designed to help anyone with communication problems tell others about themselves. It is useful when going for respite, having hospital visits, starting a new school and meeting people for the first time.
Parents have told us that having a personal portfolio has been especially useful during transition when children meet a lot of new people and it can be hard for them to have to keep explaining what makes them different. As well as general information about your child and their needs, Portfolios typically include strategies and tips on things other people can do to help your child. Such as the best way to give them instructions or suggestions about how to handle mealtimes.
We offer a free service to help you put a portfolio together for your child. Filling in our booklet, Help us to help you produce a ‘Personal Portfolio’ is the first step of making your Personal Portfolio. It guides you through the process and asks questions to make you think about the information you want to go into the portfolio.
The guide is just that, a guide, you can include any information you and your child think is important and be as creative as you want. Children often enjoy helping put the portfolio together and might want to draw some pictures to go inside it. It can also be nice to include copies of awards or certificates you child might have been awarded.
To request a copy of the guide call us on 0800 328 1159 or email info@cerebra.org.uk and we will send you a hard copy. If you prefer you can download and print it yourself.
Once you have completed the guide booklet and chosen your photographs, send it all back to us and we will create your Personal Portfolio.
